I guess I’m getting old. For the second time in three trips to Six Flags with our youth, I believe I got a touch of heat stroke. I think it’s a combination of heat, riding roller coasters and just not drinking enough liquids. The abnormal depletion of fluids in your body is called dehydration. Yeah, that’s it…I was dehydrated! Or it could be I’m just getting old. Anyway, the dehydration excuse got me thinking about our spiritual lives. It made me think about Jesus’ encounter with the woman at the well and their discussion about water. The woman spoke of thirst and drinking water, literally. Jesus chose that moment to talk to her about a different problem she might have…spiritual dehydration. In John 4: 13 he says to the woman, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” Of course, the living water that Jesus spoke of was himself. Do you ever find yourself spiritually dehydrated? I certainly have and usually the source for it is that I’ve just not spent enough time with the “Living Water.” The fact is, as believers, we can only go so long without Jesus before we find ourselves in a spiritual desert. If you are spiritually dehydrated go to the source that will hydrate you—Jesus! One of the most refreshing times I’ve ever had, spiritually speaking, is when I spent a week just reading the words of Jesus. It’s amazing how encouraging, challenging and uplifting His words can be. Be sure to pray before reading His words, asking the Holy Spirit to teach you and refresh you. It’s also very helpful to actually be obedient to His words as well! p>Jesus never said life on this earth would be easy. In fact, he said it would be difficult. But he also tells us to, “take heart, I have overcome the world.” Knowing that Jesus has already overcome everything this world had to throw at Him, it only makes sense that we look to Him as our source of strength…as our source of hydration…when our lives get overwhelming and even spiritually dry. It’s a long hot summer…remember to take a drink of the “Living Water.” With Love, Pastor Bruce |
