“Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him (Luke 24: 13-16).”

These two followers of Christ were talking about all they had witnessed with regard to Jesus’ crucifixion. They told the stranger (Jesus) that they had hoped Jesus would be the one to redeem Israel. But now he was not only dead, his body was missing as well. Jesus then shared the Scriptures with them emphasizing that everything happened just as it was supposed to.

Finally, as they sat down to break bread with this “stranger,” their eyes were opened and they realized it had been Jesus all along…they believed!

The joy of being a follower of Christ is that Easter is never over. The day we celebrate as Easter may have come and gone, but Jesus is forever with us through the Holy Spirit. Maybe you are on your own “road to Emmaus” right now. You are having trouble believing the resurrection. Don’t despair. Allow the Holy Spirit to speak to your heart…read, again, the words of Christ…the words that fulfilled all the prophecies in the Old Testament.

Look for Jesus along your road. Maybe He will speak to you through His Word…maybe he will speak to you through a loved one…maybe He will speak to you through the beauty of His creation. Whatever the case, do not ever stop looking for Him or to Him for hope.

That’s what the two on the road needed more than anything…hope. That, too, is what this world needs…the hope of Jesus…the resurrected Jesus!

“Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us (verse 32a).”

Yes, it is post-Easter, but what a wonderful time to allow Christ’s Words to burn in our hearts!

With Love,

Pastor Bruce
